Natural Habit with a Single “B”
Oil on Canvas
48” x 30”, Unframed
Breaking conventions in the most natural way. Nothing added. Our turtle was born with a cover over his back and under his belly. We see his face only when he wants us to. He is calm and curious yet poised to take action. He will spring The Fifth Rabbit from vitrine no matter how many letters or lines it takes him to do so. He is undeterred by the Wall Watcher, and somewhat spurred on by its presence.
On a compositional note, the intricate detail on the head and the leg tempt the Wall Watcher to do what we all do; ignore the middle.
A photo taken by the artist at the Wildlife & Discovery Center of WV serves as an anatomical reference for the turtle.
Fall 2026 – Recounted Encounters with Scales
This collection “recounts” particular encounters with occasionally scaly characters during the “letter-by-letter and line-by-line” escapade of The Fifth Rabbit (whose tale has yet to be revealed). The color story is led by deep shades and light tints of phthalo turquoise which represent the clarity of water and the inquisitiveness of the natural world. Offset by the deep black, it becomes magical. Vermilion (a startling red-orange) is a supporting color. It adds an eye dropper’s drop of chaos which seeps into the moments of tranquility.
*Artwork will ship within 30 days of order placement. Artwork will be signed by the artist in the bottom right corner. All paintings in the Recounted Encounters with Scales series were photographed while wet (which accounts for the visible shine), and will dry with a matte finish. Edges of the canvas may be painted upon request. Fifth Rabbit Studios, LLC strongly recommends that the artwork be professionally framed.
